RECLAIMING REST PART 3

LEARN

Roman 8:34

Psalms 23

Luke 6:40

Hebrew 4:16

“Will you ever learn?” is the cry of an exasperated heart, often “How many times do I have to tell you not to do that?” Cue a heavy, dramatic sigh. It can be incredibly frustrating to tell someone the same thing over and over, hoping for change, searching for a sign that they’re even listening to you. Lack of follow-through leads to disillusionment, and often, resentment. Chances are we’ve wondered if God may feel this way towards us . . . have you?

But this is not his way. “Learn from me,” he whispers time and time again, “for I am gentle and lowly in heart.” The Bible makes it clear that Jesus is rooting for us in every moment. He even sits in Heaven praying for us constantly! His invitation to learn from him is one marked by his patience and complete knowledge of our weakness. We are prone to falter, but he has promised to forgive.

Another word for “disciple” is “learner.” When we become disciples of Jesus, we commit to learning from him for the rest of our lives! Jesus’ perspective reminds us that we are free to try, fail, and start again, always and only in his grace. All he wants from us is teachable hearts. In living this way, Jesus assures us, “You will find rest for your souls.”

Today, instead of beating yourself up when you fall short, will you simply ask Jesus to teach and help you?

For further reflection:

What is something you sense that Jesus is trying to teach you? How can you best engage in this learning process with him?

RECLAIMING REST PART 2

COME ‭

Matthew 16:24-26 NIV

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

John 15:5

John 15:14-15 NIV

Colossians 3:17

Matthew 11:28-30

The hardest part about throwing a surprise party is subtly convincing the guest of honor to arrive just when and where you’ve planned. It’s always a gamble! Can you imagine the disappointment of those gathered in hushed suspense if he or she didn’t show? All the effort of decorating, gathering loved ones, preparing food, and wrapping gifts would be left standing, unused, and unappreciated.

The first of Jesus’ beckoning in Matthew 11:28-30, the call to come to him, reminds us that this is where we should always begin. Like the honored guest at a party, we just need to show up. Jesus has taken care of the rest! For some of us, this coming to Jesus is for the first time; for others, it is a returning. Whether for a brief moment or a lifetime, any time spent in his presence is rich with the invitation to rest.

It can be all too easy to equate escape and rest. So often we want to get away and think of nothing. The burdens we bear hush us into reclusively, but all along we’ve been made for more! The Apostle Paul put it like this: “In him we live and move and have our being.” And, “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” What a worthy refuge is our God!

Today, right now even, is the best time to spend a few quiet moments coming to Jesus with your whole self. Bring all you’ve been carrying. Pray for his help to lay those things down, and pray for your empty spaces to be filled with him. This is your daily doorway to rest.

For further reflection:

  • When you think of Jesus, how do you really see him? Is he warm and welcoming? Cold and distant? Harsh and exacting? Lax and obliging? Aloof and unavailable? How does he describe himself?
